10 Tips For Raising Resilient Kids | Psych Central

10 Tips For Raising Resilient KidsWhile adulthood is filled with serious responsibilities, childhood isn?t exactly stress-free. Kids take tests, learn new information, change schools, change neighborhoods, get sick, get braces, encounter bullies, make new friends and occasionally get hurt by those friends.

What helps kids in navigating these kinds of challenges is resilience. Resilient kids are problem solvers. They face unfamiliar or tough situations and strive to find good solutions.

?When they step into a situation, [resilient kids] have a sense they can figure out what they need to do and can handle what is thrown at them with a sense of confidence,? said Lynn Lyons, LICSW, a psychotherapist who specializes in treating anxious families and co-author of the book Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous and Independent Children with anxiety expert Reid Wilson, Ph.D.

This doesn?t mean that kids have to do everything on their own, she said. Rather, they know how to ask for help and are able to problem-solve their next steps.

Resilience isn?t birthright. It can be taught. Lyons encouraged parents to equip their kids with the skills to handle the unexpected, which actually contrasts our cultural approach.

?We have become a culture of trying to make sure our kids are comfortable. We as parents are trying to stay one step ahead of everything our kids are going to run into.? The problem? ?Life doesn?t work that way.?

Anxious people have an especially hard time helping their kids tolerate uncertainty, simply because they have a hard time tolerating it themselves. ?The idea of putting your child through the same pain that you went through is intolerable,? Lyons said. So anxious parents try to protect their kids and shield them from worst-case scenarios.

However, a parent?s job isn?t to be there all the time for their kids, she said. It?s to teach them to handle uncertainty and to problem-solve. Below, Lyons shared her valuable suggestions for raising resilient kids.

1. Don?t accommodate every need.

According to Lyons, ?whenever we try to provide certainty and comfort, we are getting in the way of children being able to develop their own problem-solving and mastery.? (Overprotecting kids only fuels their anxiety.)

She gave a ?dramatic but not uncommon example.? A child gets out of school at 3:15. But they worry about their parent picking them up on time. So the parent arrives an hour earlier and parks by their child?s classroom so they can see the parent is there.

In another example, parents let their 7-year-old sleep on a mattress on the floor in their bedroom because they?re too uncomfortable to sleep in their own room.

2. Avoid eliminating all risk.

Naturally, parents want to keep their kids safe. But eliminating all risk robs kids of learning resiliency. In one family Lyons knows, the kids aren?t allowed to eat when the parents are not home, because there?s a risk they might choke on their food. (If the kids are old enough to stay home alone, they?re old enough to eat, she said.)

The key is to allow appropriate risks and teach your kids essential skills. ?Start young. The child who?s going to get his driver?s license is going to have started when he?s 5 [years old] learning how to ride his bike and look both ways [slow down and pay attention].?

Giving kids age-appropriate freedom helps them learn their own limits, she said.

3. Teach them to problem-solve.

Let?s say your child wants to go to sleep-away camp, but they?re nervous about being away from home. An anxious parent, Lyons said, might say, ?Well, then there?s no reason for you to go.?

But a better approach is to normalize your child?s nervousness, and help them figure out how to navigate being homesick. So you might ask your child how they can practice getting used to being away from home.

When Lyons?s son was anxious about his first final exam, they brainstormed strategies, including how he?d manage his time and schedule in order to study for the exam.

In other words, engage your child in figuring out how they can handle challenges. Give them the opportunity, over and over, ?to figure out what works and what doesn?t.?

4. Teach your kids concrete skills.

When Lyons works with kids, she focuses on the specific skills they?ll need to learn in order to handle certain situations. She asks herself, ?Where are we going with this [situation]? What skill do they need to get there?? For instance, she might teach a shy child how to greet someone and start a conversation.

5. Avoid ?why? questions.

?Why? questions aren?t helpful in promoting problem-solving. If your child left their bike in the rain, and you ask ?why?? ?what will they say? I was careless. I?m an 8-year-old,? Lyons said.

Ask ?how? questions instead. ?You left your bike out in the rain, and your chain rusted. How will you fix that?? For instance, they might go online to see how to fix the chain or contribute money to a new chain, she said.

Lyons uses ?how? questions to teach her clients different skills. ?How do you get yourself out of bed when it?s warm and cozy? How do you handle the noisy boys on the bus that bug you??

6. Don?t provide all the answers.

Rather than providing your kids with every answer, start using the phrase ?I don?t know,? ?followed by promoting problem-solving,? Lyons said. Using this phrase helps kids learn to tolerate uncertainty and think about ways to deal with potential challenges.

Also, starting with small situations when they?re young helps prepare kids to handle bigger trials. They won?t like it, but they?ll get used to it, she said.

For instance, if your child asks if they?re getting a shot at the doctor?s office, instead of placating them, say, ?I don?t know. You might be due for a shot. Let?s figure out how you?re doing to get through it.?

Similarly, if your child asks, ?Am I going to get sick today?? instead of saying, ?No, you won?t,? respond with, ?You might, so how might you handle that??

If your child worries they?ll hate their college, instead of saying, ?You?ll love it,? you might explain that some freshmen don?t like their school, and help them figure out what to do if they feel the same way, she said.

7. Avoid talking in catastrophic terms.

Pay attention to what you say to your kids and around them. Anxious parents, in particular, tend to ?talk very catastrophically around their children,? Lyons said. For instance, instead of saying ?It?s really important for you to learn how to swim,? they say, ?It?s really important for you to learn how to swim because it?d be devastating to me if you drowned.?

8. Let your kids make mistakes.

?Failure is not the end of the world. [It?s the] place you get to when you figure out what to do next,? Lyons said. Letting kids mess up is tough and painful for parents. But it helps kids learn how to fix slip-ups and make better decisions next time.

According to Lyons, if a child has an assignment, anxious or overprotective parents typically want to make sure the project is perfect, even if their child has no interest in doing it in the first place. But let your kids see the consequences of their actions.

Similarly, if your child doesn?t want to go to football practice, let them stay home, Lyons said. Next time they?ll sit on the bench and probably feel uncomfortable.

9. Help them manage their emotions.

Emotional management is key in resilience. Teach your kids that all emotions are OK, Lyons said. It?s OK to feel angry that you lost the game or someone else finished your ice cream. Also, teach them that after feeling their feelings, they need to think through what they?re doing next, she said.

?Kids learn very quickly which powerful emotions get them what they want. Parents have to learn how to ride the emotions, too.? You might tell your child, ?I understand that you feel that way. I?d feel the same way if I were in your shoes, but now you have to figure out what the appropriate next step is.?

If your child throws a tantrum, she said, be clear about what behavior is appropriate (and inappropriate). You might say, ?I?m sorry we?re not going to get ice cream, but this behavior is unacceptable.?

10. Model resiliency.

Of course, kids also learn from observing their parents? behavior. Try to be calm and consistent, Lyons said. ?You cannot say to a child you want them to control their emotions, while you yourself are flipping out.?

?Parenting takes a lot of practice and we all screw up.? When you do make a mistake, admit it. ?I really screwed up. I?m sorry I handled that poorly. Let?s talk about a different way to handle that in the future,? Lyons said.

Resiliency helps kids navigate the inevitable trials, triumphs and tribulations of childhood and adolescence. Resilient kids also become resilient adults, able to survive and thrive in the face of life?s unavoidable stressors.

China Crowns Asia's Tallest Tower In Shanghai

Work on the main structure of the world's second tallest skyscraper has been completed, as the final beam was placed on the Shanghai Tower.

A crane placed the steel beam 1,900ft above the ground in Shanghai, China's commercial hub, as the building formally overtook Taiwan's Taipei 101 building to become the highest tower in Asia.

Globally it is second only to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at 2,723ft.

The Shanghai Tower, which costs an estimated $14.8bn yuan (?1.56bn), will reach over 2,066ft when it is finally finished.

"It's a landmark and it will change the skyline of Shanghai," Xia Jun, of US design firm Gensler said.

His comments came at a media conference following the traditional "topping out" ceremony.

"I don't think the importance of an architecture lies entirely in its height," he added.

The structure stands alongside China's previous tallest building, the 1,614ft Shanghai World Financial Centre - and is due to open next year, by which time it may have been surpassed as the tallest building in China.

Chinese firm Broad Group have announced plans to construct an 2,749ft tower in the central Chinese city of Changsha, which they say will be completed in April.

But reports in state-run media late last month said construction on the tower had been called off, because the building had not gained full local government approval.

Work on the Shanghai tower began in 2008, and its construction was partially backed by Shanghai's city government.

Concerns were raised last year when long cracks began to appear in the ground close to the building, prompting fears that ground around the tower was subsiding.

But Ding Jiemin, an architect who collaborated on the tower's design, played down fears on Saturday.

"These problems were just during construction period, it will not affect the security of the architecture," he said.

China is home to three of the world's 10 tallest buildings, according to research group Emporis -- which did not count the Shanghai Tower.

The Shanghai Tower's final beam was decorated with red ribbons and flags, and carried a banner which read: "Team of hoisting heroes".

Jobs report shows snail?s pace recovery

A lukewarm July jobs report, with employers reporting that they added the fewest new positions since March, is another sign of a sluggish recovery, economists said.

Employers added 162,000 jobs last month while the unemployment rate fell to 7.4 percent, largely because of a shrinking labor force.

?It?s not striking you as something horrible, but it?s not the direction you want to see,? said Elliot Winer, chief economist at Northeast Economic Analysis Group.

Many of the jobs that were added were low-paying, low-productivity jobs in the retail and food-services industries, according to Nigel Gault, co-chief economist of The Parthenon Group.

?We didn?t create a lot of jobs, and we weren?t creating good ones,? Gault said, who added the trend is not new. ?It?s certainly been something evident over the past year.?

More than half of the new jobs added in July were in those sectors. The average workweek and hourly earnings both dropped, as well.

The results leave uncertainty about the short-term decisions of the Federal Reserve Bank. Chairman Ben Bernanke had indicated tapering of the central bank?s $85 billion bond buying program could end in September if the economy continued to improve. The bond buying program has kept interest rates low, and has been a key factor in a resurgent housing market.

?It leaves fed policy up in the air,? Gault said.

(AP) ? Comic and daytime television host Ellen DeGeneres was picked to host the Academy Awards for the second time.

Show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced DeGeneres' selection Friday. The movie awards show will air on ABC on March 2.

"There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity," the producers said in a statement. "She is beloved everywhere."

DeGeneres quipped: "I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say ? the third time's the charm."

She also announced the gig on Twitter, posting: "It's official: I'm hosting the #Oscars! I'd like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra."

Last year's host, "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, drew mixed reviews for an edgy performance that included a song-and-dance number, "We Saw Your Boobs," about actresses who had gone topless on screen. He had already taken himself out of the running for a return engagement next year.

Academy Awards organizers had hoped to attract a younger audience with MacFarlane, and the ratings showed they succeeded.

With DeGeneres, they went for a star that Hollywood and television viewers were familiar and comfortable with.

About her first hosting role in 2007, television critic Frazier Moore of The Associated Press wrote that "like her, the evening was easygoing, comfortable and relatively unsurprising."

DeGeneres was nominated for an Emmy Award for her last gig. Her daytime talk show has won 45 Daytime Emmys during a decade on the air.

The Oscars, with 40.3 million viewers this year, is very often the year's most-watched television event after the Super Bowl.

Germany?s Electric and Gas Suppliers Look toward Canada

Germany?s electric and gas suppliers always seem to be making energy headlines. As an alternative energy leader and with all the nation?s sweeping energy reforms, the nation?s traditional and alternative electric and gas suppliers have had a lot to deal with?and rather quickly at that. Since 2011 when Germany declared its plans to abandon nuclear in the wake of the Fukushima disaster in Japan, the energy industry has been awash with change?and much of it good. Most recently, for example, Germany made headlines when it announced it would reduce its dependence Russia?s Gazprom and increase ties with Canada.

The Problem with Gazprom

Gazprom is Russia?s state-owned gas supplier and, according to Forbes, ?provides enormous amounts of energy to both Eastern and Western Europe? while fueling its own needs too. The state-owned every giant has been viewed in Europe, however, as monopolistic and Germany is hardly the only nation to desire a reduction in dependence. Recently Lithuania has also made plans to increase liquefied gas imports rather than rely completely on its energy-powerful neighbor.

Experts aren?t entirely sure about how much money Gazprom funnels into the Kremlin, but they are fairly sure that ?its profits are clearly quite sizable and this money clearly helps bolster the government and keep the Russian economy afloat,? according to the Forbes report. Yet until recently with the boom in shale gas and increased production of alternative energies, Russia has been, more or less, like the gas industry god father and generated no small amount of resentment when it comes to high rates?rates which few other nations could negotiate down. Essentially, Europe could count on Gazprom, as Forbes notes, to be both non-transparent and unpredictable. Consequently, nobody is really shocked that Gazprom?s international customers would be willing to dump the utility giant when a better offer came along.

Oh Canada

For Germany, that better energy offer comes from the ?the Canadian company Pieridae Energy,? according to RT. According to a new deal, ?will supply five million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Western Europe for an unspecified several billion euros,? according to the RT report. While Germany isn?t abandoning its Gazprom imports entirely, it does reduce the nation?s reliance on Russia. Germany has stated that the high cost of German gas has led to losses for its own electric and gas suppliers. Now, Germany has a better handle on energy stability since its energy base will be far more diversified.

The Project?s Launch

Germany?s largest energy provider E.ON will begin importing gas from the Canadian company by 2020. According for the Centre for Eastern Studies, the contract involves ?the purchase of 6.5 billion m3 of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a year for 20 years beginning 2020. This volume amounts to 7% of Germany?s annual gas consumption?. The overall deal, according to the centre, will be ?the first contract in history for supplies of such large volumes of gas from North America to Europe.?

The Dynamic Energy Market in Europe

Supplies of LNG and shale gas are transforming the energy sector in Europe. Gazprom is one of the major energy players on the continent so it?s not surprising that is has a tremendous amount of change in store. Some of the change, of course, may be due to its own practices. As the Forbes writer pointed out, given the fact that it was the same distance, through similar pipeline, and the same product?why was Gazprom charging the Czech Republic thirty percent more that product than Hungary, for instance? Price gaps are just one of the reasons why many nations are looking to secure their energy from other sources just as Germany has.

The market is also waiting to hear whether France will lift its ban on shale gas exploration and fracking?a development that could also impact the energy dynamic. Additionally, the UK is exploring its own shale stores and coming to grips with a new energy future. Put simply, Europe?s energy scene is in flux and major developments seem to be occurring on a monthly basis. Experts also say that renewable energies are increasing at a fast rate in many nations which is going to impact the energy trade in one way or another. For now, Germany is readying itself for a new energy partner and the Canadians are happy to have the honor.

New EPA chief: Climate controls will help economy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's top environmental official wasted no time Tuesday taking on opponents of the administration's plan to crack down on global warming pollution.

In her first speech as the head of EPA, Gina McCarthy told an audience gathered at Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Mass., that curbing climate-altering pollution will spark business innovation, grow jobs and strengthen the economy. The message was classic Obama, who has long said that the environment and the economy aren't in conflict and has sold ambitious plans to reduce greenhouse gases as a means to jumpstart a clean energy economy.

McCarthy signaled Tuesday that she was ready for the fight, saying that the agency would continue issuing new rules, regardless of claims by Republicans and industry groups that under Obama the EPA has been the most aggressive and overreaching since it was formed more than 40 years ago.

"Can we stop talking about environmental regulations killing jobs? Please, at least for today," said McCarthy, referring to one of the favorite talking points of Republicans and industry groups.

"Let's talk about this as an opportunity of a lifetime, because there are too many lifetimes at stake," she said of efforts to address global warming.

In Obama's first four years, the EPA has issued the first-ever limits on toxic mercury pollution from power plants, regulated greenhouse gases for the first time, and updated a host of air pollution health standards.

McCarthy acknowledged the agency had been the most productive in its history. But she said Tuesday that "we are not just about rules and regulations, we are about getting environmental improvement."

But improvement, she said, could be made "everywhere."

That optimistic vision runs counter to claims by Republican lawmakers and some industry groups that more rules will kill jobs and fossil fuel industries. The EPA under Obama has already put in place or proposed new rules to reduce carbon pollution from cars and trucks, large smokestacks, and new power plants - regulations that McCarthy helped to draft as head of the air pollution office. Next on its agenda is the nation's existing fleet of coal-fired power plants, the largest single source of carbon dioxide left. Obama in a June speech gave the agency until June 2014 to draft those regulations.

"It is not supposed to be easy. It is supposed to be hard," McCarthy said of the road ahead. "I don't think it is my job out of the gate to know what the path forward is. It is my obligation to let those voices be heard and listen to them."

A panel in the Republican-controlled House recently signed off on a plan to cut the agency's budget by a third and attached a series of measures that McCarthy said "do everything but say the EPA can't do anything."

Yet, last week, in a victory, a federal court dismissed challenges brought by Texas and power companies to EPA's plans to regulate the largest sources of heat-trapping gases.

"Climate change will not be resolved overnight," she added. "But it will be engaged over the next three years - that I can promise you."

Seaside trash and treasure

With stormy weather forecast, conservationists consider the best and worst things that will be washing up on British beaches.

This weekend heralds the beginning of National Marine Week, the Wildlife Trusts' annual celebration of sea life. Weather forecasters are warning that conditions could be stormy, and following wild weather, a variety of flotsam and jetsam can be found on British beaches.

There are plenty of natural wonders to discover. But conservationists say that a growing amount of what is washing up is manmade.

Treasure hunting

When it comes to the best things on Britain's beaches, Joan Edwards, who runs the Wildlife Trusts' Living Seas programme, says there's no better time for a strandline stroll than the calm days following a storm.

"At this time of year it's a pleasure to walk along the beach. You can see what you're looking for, the sun is shining and after a storm you never know what treasures you might find," she says.

Her top ten bits of biological booty you can find on the shore this summer are: mermaids purses, whelk egg cases, goose barnacles, cuttlefish bones, crab claws, sponges, tropical beans, by-the-wind-sailor jellyfish, kelp and limpet shells.

But stormy weather also washes up less welcome manmade trash, rather than natural treasures.

Every September, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) leads regular beach cleanups, including its annual Beachwatch Big Weekend campaign which aims to get an army of volunteers to the seaside to deal with some of the mess.

Last year the charity filled 1,800 bin bags with waste from over 90km of beaches in the two days.

Plastic problem

"Plastic bits and pieces made up almost 65% of what we found [in last year's Beachwatch] and beach litter levels just continue to rise - the problem's not going away," says Emma Cunningham, MCS Litter Campaigns Officer.

Plastic poses a serious threat to our marine wildlife as they can become entangled in waste or ingest items that do not break down easily.

Plastic bags are particularly fatal because they can block digestive systems when mistaken for jellyfish by larger animals, leading to starvation and death. Bags have been recovered from the stomachs of beached turtles and whales around the UK coast.

Even the smallest plastic waste, such as particles known as "nurdles", pose dangers. Small creatures can mistake them for food and die from ingesting them, in turn denying larger animals the prey they need to survive.

Also, biologists are becoming concerned that toxins in this micro-plastic waste are transferred through species with unknown effects.

"There is a worrying potential for toxins to accumulate through the food chain and ultimately on to us," says Mrs Cunningham.

"Nobody knows the true impact of this pollutant transfer."

Mrs Cunningham recommends a straight-forward approach to ridding our coast of its worst features: reducing how much waste we create and getting involved in litter picks to tackle what is already there.

Mermaids purse

Dog shark eggcase

These whimsically named items are actually the egg cases of dog sharks and you can identify the species by studying the shape of the "purse"

Dog shark eggcase

Whelk egg case

These fragile structures can be the same size as a tennis ball and contain 500 eggs. They look like a lump of bubble wrap and are usually empty but you may find yellow tinted ones still have whelks inside

Goose barnacles

Pedunculata

These crustaceans attach to debris deep in the sea on long stalks but can be found on shores in the South West after a storm

Goose barnacles

Sponge

Although more often associated with tropical seas, sponges are found in UK waters too

Cuttlefish 'bone'

The flat, white structures are familiar sights in pet shops where they are sold as bird food but belong originally to cuttlefish. They are a kind of internal shell in the cephalopods that controls buoyancy

Cuttlefish bone

Tropical beans

Stormy seas in tropical waters dislodge the seeds and beans of island plants, some of which reach the size of golf balls and can be swept to our shores

By-the-wind-sailor jellyfish

Velella velella

These small purple jellyfish are named for the gas-filled "sails" on their backs which help them to traverse the seas. They wash up on beaches in the South West following heavy weather

By-the-wind-sailor jellyfish

Crab claws

As they grow, crabs moult their exoskeletons which means regularly shedding claws and carapaces. They then inflate the soft tissue underneath with water before it hardens to create a new shell

Kelp

If seas are stormy early in the life of this common brown sea weed the stalks will break and large deposits can end up on the beach

Kelp on the beach

Limpet shells

Ferocious waves will detach these molluscs from their rocky homes but they also fall prey to dog whelks. Look for a tiny hole in the shell where the whelk's rasping tongue attacked

PS4 development kits cost about $2,500, but Sony is loaning many out for free

July 25th, 2013 Posted in General Sony, News, PS3, PS4, Xbox One Posted By: Austin

It?s no surprise to anyone that Sony is being extremely proactive in trying to secure developers for PS4 after the early-years-of-PS3 debacle where no one seemed to care about developing for it, and one of the ways they seem to be accomplishing that is by lending out PS4 development kits to ?favored developers? for free. A Sony spokesperson said that they?re attempting to be extremely flexible with indies, and one indie developer said ?they are handing them out like candy?.

But if you can?t get one on loan, how much should you expect to pay for a PS4 dev kit? Roughly $2,500, according to sources. That?s about $2,000 more than an Xbox One dev kit, and although Microsoft has a fee you have to pay to them in addition to that cost, it still comes in well below $1,000.

PS3 dev kits ranged from $1,000 to $10,000 last gen.

Insurgents kill 9 police in northern Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Insurgents ambushed a police headquarters in northern Iraq early Wednesday, killing at least nine policemen and extending the surge of attacks that has killed more than 500 people this month alone, officials said.

The attack took place in the town of Bashmaya outside the city of Mosul, which has been one of the major flashpoints in a wave of bloodshed that has washed over the country since April and left more than 3,000 people dead. The scale of the violence is intensifying fears of a return to the widespread sectarian killing that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

A police official said nine policemen were killed and two wounded in the initial attack, while an ambulance rushing to the scene was hit by a roadside bomb, wounding the driver and his assistant, the official said.

A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not allowed to talk to the media.

Insurgents this year have regularly attacked security forces in Mosul, a long-time militant stronghold.

On Monday a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into an army convoy, killing at least 13 people including ten soldiers. The day after, police found the bodies of four off-duty policemen on a road with bullet wounds in their heads, and gunmen in a speeding car shot dead two other off-duty policemen as they were walking in a street.

Also Wednesday, a parked car bomb went off next to a passing army patrol outside the northern city of Kirkuk, wounding an officer and three soldiers, police Lt. Col. Abbas Qadir said. Kirkuk is 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

The security situation in Iraq began to deteriorate after security forces cracked down in April on a protest camp in the northern city of Hawija, sparking clashes in which 44 civilians and one member of the security forces were killed, according to estimates by the United Nations.

Overall levels of violence have since escalated and insurgent attacks have become more audacious, including raids this week against two high-security prisons near Baghdad that killed dozens and set free hundreds of inmates, including al-Qaida-linked militants.

On Tuesday, al-Qaida's Iraqi branch claimed responsibility for the attack.

Hands-on with Verizon?s Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini

Verizon Droid Mini Droid Ultra Droid Max Previews

Motorola and Verizon teamed up and introduced three new Droid smartphones at a press conference on Tuesday. The Droid Mini, Droid Ultra and Droid Maxx are each equipped with a 720p display, 1.7GHz dual-core processor with a customized X8 mobile computing system, 2GB of RAM, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and a 10-megapixel camera on the back, which can be activated with a simple twist of the wrist. All three devices feature a unibody design and what Motorola calls a ?3D fiber weave Kevlar pattern? on the back.

[More from BGR: Moto X leak may reveal Google?s plan to attack its own Android partners]

The difference between the devices lies within their respective screen and battery sizes. The Mini is equipped with a 4.3-inch display, while the Ultra and Maxx have a 5-inch screen. As for battery sizes, the Mini and Ultra deliver 24 hours of battery life with 2,000 mAh and 2,530 mAh batteries, respectively. The Maxx is a true champion with its massive 3,500 mAh battery that is capable of delivering 48 hours of usage, according to Motorola.

[More from BGR: Verizon debuts brand new Droid smartphone lineup: Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, Droid Mini]

Google?s influence at Motorola is visible in the design of the new Droids, which are incredibly slim and compact despite their impressive battery life. The Ultra is the thinnest 4G LTE smartphone on the market in fact, measuring a mere 7.18mm thicj, while the Mini and Maxx are 8.9mm and 8.5mm thin, respectively. All three models run a nearly stock version of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and include small, and welcomed, tweaks from Motorola. The software includes a variety of improvements to the camera and features such as Droid Zap, Motorola Connect, Active Displays, and the ability to access Google Now at any time with the phrase ?Ok Google Now.?

The camera app includes a variety of settings that can be accessed with a swipe to the right. Users can also use a feature known as Droid Zap to share photos with friends, which can be done with a two finger swipe gesture upwards. Photos are sent to a personalized cloud account that can be accessed by other Droid-branded smartphones within a 300-foot radius for 60 seconds. To pull images from the cloud, users can perform a two-finger swipe gesture downward.

Motorola Connect is similar to the Android application Mighty Text. After installing a Chrome extension on their computers, users will be able to read and reply to text messages and see incoming calls even when their phone is not by their side. Lastly, the new Droids feature an Active Display, which means the display will pulse to reveal the time and various notifications.

These phones are impressive, period. This is the new Motorola and I like it.

Unlike the HTC One mini and Galaxy S4 mini, the Droid Mini doesn?t skimp on the specs. Motorola is delivering three premium devices that will appeal to a wide variety of users. They aren?t perfect, however ? the Ultra and Maxx are equipped with large 5-inch displays that are only 720p, and all three devices are fingerprint magnets from front to back.

Plus, we still have the Moto X on our minds.

Verizon?s new Droid Ultra ($199), Droid Maxx ($299) and Droid Mini ($99) are available for preorder beginning on Tuesday and they will start shipping on August 20th. In the meantime, be sure to check out all the hands-on images in our photo gallery.

GSK boss to address China scandal at quarterly results: sources

LONDON | Sun Jul 21, 2013 11:38am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.L) Chief Executive Andrew Witty will detail what action the drugmaker is taking in response to allegations of bribery against it in China when he presents quarterly results on Wednesday, sources familiar with the matter said.

Chinese authorities are investigating GSK deals with travel agencies worth up to 3 billion yuan ($489 million) that they allege were used to facilitate bribes. The scale of the payments has fuelled debate as to whether GSK surveillance systems were up to the job of spotting wrongdoing.

Although an internal company investigation has yet to conclude, people familiar with the matter said Witty would discuss what may have gone wrong in the scandal, which has rocked GSK's reputation and left its management in China in disarray.

"He will give his perspective on what appears to have gone on and how it can be put right," one of the sources said on Sunday.

Britain's biggest drugmaker, which has described the allegations as "shameful", has already hired Ernst & Young to conduct an independent review of its systems in China and sent three senior executives to lead the response on the ground.

A company spokesman said it was also keeping all relevant regulators updated as appropriate. The charges from China could expose GSK to prosecution under Britain's Bribery Act and the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

GSK declined to comment further ahead of the second-quarter results, which are due at 1100 GMT on July 24.

Despite the crisis, the company's shares have held up - reflecting the fact that China accounts for only around 3 percent of sales.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch analysts said in a research note that the financial impact of the affair was likely to be limited, although the issue would be a "key topic" at the results update.

OTHERS SNARED IN CHINA

While the spotlight remains firmly on GSK, Chinese authorities are also probing other companies and individuals involved in the pharmaceutical sector as part of a broad-based drive to root out corruption.

Two people familiar with the situation said at the weekend that Shanghai police had arrested a British man, Peter Humphrey, who runs an international business risk advisory firm that has worked with drug companies including GSK.

Humphrey - the founder of ChinaWhys, which says on its website that it aims to guide multinationals through "the labyrinth" of risks and opportunities in China - could not be reached for comment.

Last week, Chinese authorities also visited the Shanghai office of Belgian drugmaker UCB (UCB.BR). A UCB spokesman said the visit was part of a wider investigation that included other drug companies, although he did not identify them.

Katherine Jackson: My son 'was not a freak'

Celebs

Image: A courtroom sketch of Katherine Jackson

Mona Edwards / Reuters

A courtroom sketch depicts the testimony of Katherine Jackson, mother of late pop star Michael Jackson, at Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday.

For 12 weeks, Katherine Jackson has sat patiently in the Los Angeles courtroom where she is suing her late son's concert promoters and listened to other people describe Michael Jackson, his last weeks alive and his sudden death.

Finally given the turn to speak on Friday, Jackson told the court, "My son is not a freak."

"The most difficult thing is to sit here in this court and listen to all the bad things they say about my son," the soft-spoken 83-year-old mother and grandmother said as she began her long-anticipated testimony in her case against AEG Live.

Wearing a purple floral blazer and purple shirt, the self-proclaimed "private" grandmother had to reveal things about her family she would have preferred to keep to herself. Among them: that Michael's 15-year-old daughter Paris recently tried to kill herself because "she wanted to go where daddy was."

Katherine Jackson wept often during her testimony, including when she saw footage of her son singing, dancing, and introducing his famous moonwalk during 1983's "Motown 25" special. Even as a baby, her son was "dancing around," pretending his bottle was a microphone, she said. "He was born that way, dancing around. He wouldn't be still."

Katherine also spoke of all the things Michael Jackson had done for her over the years, including remodeling her house and plastering a room in her house with wall-to-wall family photos. A video of Neverland, his enormous California home, was shown, and Katherine described the property. She said her grandchildren "loved Neverland."

Katherine then admitted Michael suffered pain from "bad burns," back injuries, and had the skin condition vitiligo. She said she knew Michael took pain pills, and she heard from her other children that Michael was abusing prescription medication, but she didn't know what to believe. She said she visited him in Las Vegas a few years ago to ask him about it.

"He promised, he kept saying, 'I'm OK,'" she told the jury. "Sometimes the mother is the last to know."

She said no one could ask for "a better son than Michael," and that she was financially dependent on him, adding, "he gave me everything."

Jackson said the first time she met Conrad Murray, the physician who administered Jackson's lethal dose of propofol, was at the hospital the day her son died.

"My son needed another doctor," she testified. "Not Dr. Murray."

"They told me, 'he didn?t make it, he didn?t make it," Jackson recalled. "I just started screaming," she said, crying and clutching a tissue in one of her hands. Jackson was then put in a room with two of Michael's children, Paris and Prince Michael ("Blanket"), 11. She said granddaughter Paris kept looking skyward saying, "I can't live without you. I'm going with you."

Wiping her face with a tissue, Katherine said the adjustment has been hard for Paris, who dotted her room with photos of her father. "I thought she was the bravest. She had a very hard time at first."

On cross-examination, Katherine admitted it was her choice alone to bring this lawsuit against AEG. She said it was hard sitting in court "listening to people call her son a freak ... it hurts to sit in court and hear all these things. It?s hard for me listening to how sick my son was and nobody was helping him."

"He was not a freak," she added.

Jackson and her grandchildren's suit alleges that AEG Live, the entertainment company that promoted Michael Jackson?s last concerts, failed to pick up on warning signs that could have saved his life. The suit also alleges that AEG didn?t properly investigate Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the singer's death in 2011 and sentenced to four years in prison.

AEG denies hiring Murray; the company says Jackson hired the physician, and says it wasn?t responsible in any way for his death.

The King of Pop died while rehearsing for "This is It," a 50-show series in London, three weeks before the tour was to start. He had last toured in 1997. Katherine testified that she had called AEG Live to express her view that her son could have done 50 shows, but not if they were spaced so closely together.

"He couldn't do every other night like AEG wanted him to do at first," she said.

Other family members have also taken the witness stand. Michael?s son, 16-year-old Michael Jackson, Jr., known as "Prince," recalled that while preparing for the 2009 tour, his father would sometimes come down the stairs and be "freezing cold" and "not strong enough." Jackson looked "malnourished," his son said.

On the day of his father's death, Prince Jackson testified that he found his father "hanging halfway off the bed and his eyes were rolling back in his head. "Murray was doing CPR. My sister was screaming the whole time saying she wants her daddy. I was waiting at the bottom of the stairs crying." When they got to the hospital, he told his sister, "Angels were watching over us," and tried to remain optimistic, but then Murray delivered the news that their father had suffered a heart attack.

Videotaped testimony of Paris Jackson, who is recovering from her suicide attempt at a residential treatment facility. was also shown to the jury of six men and women will decide the case. Katherine Jackson is expected to be the final plaintiff's witness in the case and conclude her testimony on Monday.

Asked by her lawyer if she missed Michael, Katherine Jackson replied: "Words can't explain" and began to cry.

This report contains additional reporting from NBC News staff writer Elizabeth Chuck and E! Newsproducer Claudia Rosenbaum.

Worrisome obesity epidemic: Chinese and Australians among world's most obese

Obesity has became a worldwide epidemic, and around 2.8 million people are dying each year due to obesity. The major cause of obesity is the fast food culture and globalization. A study in 2006 found that over one-fifth of the one billion obese or overweight people in the world are Chinese, and one of the fattest nations in the developed world is Australia.

Obesity has been ranked as the fifth leading risk for deaths worldwide. The recent study done by World Health Organization (WHO) in 2011, states that 40 million children under the age of five are obese or overweight. Earlier, obesity was limited to high-income countries, but now there are no economical barriers, and obesity has became a global problem. The major cause for obesity is an energy imbalance between calories consumed by a person and calories expended. Nowadays, the foods that we consume are energy dense and are high in fat content, but our lifestyle has became sedentary, which expels very less calories from the body. This problem of obesity is slowly becoming an epidemic problem. So, to discuss the problem of obesity and evaluate a solution there was a Public Health Association of Australia, international nutrition experts meet at an obesity and nutrition conference in Sydney.

One of the professor at the George Institute for Global Health in Sydney Mr. Bruce Neal said that, ?As fast as we get rid of all our traditional vectors of disease -- infections, little microbes, bugs -- we are replacing them with the new vectors of disease, which are massive transnational, national, multinational corporations selling vast amounts of salt, fat and sugar,? reported DNA newspaper.

The people are now accustomed to large servings of meals, which are well above their nutritional needs. Tim Gill, associate professor at the University of Sydney's Boden Institute of Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise and Eating Disorders says that, ?People will consume a portion that's put in front of them. People will seek value by purchasing the largest portion size, because it's relatively cheap compared to the smaller size. We've just had a disconnect in terms of what we need to eat and what we can purchase.

The problem lies with the food outlets also, as they only concentrate on their business and base their food choices on price rather than nutritional value. Jennie Brand-Miller, a professor at the University of Sydney's School of Molecular Bioscience, says that, ?Low-fat dietary advice has not been helpful on a population level. It is consistently associated with weight regain. It does not reduce the risk of chronic disease.

He also said that, to be healthy one should switch to diet that's protein rich, and has low GI carbohydrate content. And this should be the responsibility of the government to keep a check on the calorie content of the food that is being sold. By keeping certain limits on the salt, sugar and calorie content of the foods independently, the industries will also face less competitive pressure and the people will get healthy foods in the marketplace.
