10 Tips For Raising Resilient Kids | Psych Central

10 Tips For Raising Resilient KidsWhile adulthood is filled with serious responsibilities, childhood isn?t exactly stress-free. Kids take tests, learn new information, change schools, change neighborhoods, get sick, get braces, encounter bullies, make new friends and occasionally get hurt by those friends.

What helps kids in navigating these kinds of challenges is resilience. Resilient kids are problem solvers. They face unfamiliar or tough situations and strive to find good solutions.

?When they step into a situation, [resilient kids] have a sense they can figure out what they need to do and can handle what is thrown at them with a sense of confidence,? said Lynn Lyons, LICSW, a psychotherapist who specializes in treating anxious families and co-author of the book Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous and Independent Children with anxiety expert Reid Wilson, Ph.D.

This doesn?t mean that kids have to do everything on their own, she said. Rather, they know how to ask for help and are able to problem-solve their next steps.

Resilience isn?t birthright. It can be taught. Lyons encouraged parents to equip their kids with the skills to handle the unexpected, which actually contrasts our cultural approach.

?We have become a culture of trying to make sure our kids are comfortable. We as parents are trying to stay one step ahead of everything our kids are going to run into.? The problem? ?Life doesn?t work that way.?

Anxious people have an especially hard time helping their kids tolerate uncertainty, simply because they have a hard time tolerating it themselves. ?The idea of putting your child through the same pain that you went through is intolerable,? Lyons said. So anxious parents try to protect their kids and shield them from worst-case scenarios.

However, a parent?s job isn?t to be there all the time for their kids, she said. It?s to teach them to handle uncertainty and to problem-solve. Below, Lyons shared her valuable suggestions for raising resilient kids.

1. Don?t accommodate every need.

According to Lyons, ?whenever we try to provide certainty and comfort, we are getting in the way of children being able to develop their own problem-solving and mastery.? (Overprotecting kids only fuels their anxiety.)

She gave a ?dramatic but not uncommon example.? A child gets out of school at 3:15. But they worry about their parent picking them up on time. So the parent arrives an hour earlier and parks by their child?s classroom so they can see the parent is there.

In another example, parents let their 7-year-old sleep on a mattress on the floor in their bedroom because they?re too uncomfortable to sleep in their own room.

2. Avoid eliminating all risk.

Naturally, parents want to keep their kids safe. But eliminating all risk robs kids of learning resiliency. In one family Lyons knows, the kids aren?t allowed to eat when the parents are not home, because there?s a risk they might choke on their food. (If the kids are old enough to stay home alone, they?re old enough to eat, she said.)

The key is to allow appropriate risks and teach your kids essential skills. ?Start young. The child who?s going to get his driver?s license is going to have started when he?s 5 [years old] learning how to ride his bike and look both ways [slow down and pay attention].?

Giving kids age-appropriate freedom helps them learn their own limits, she said.

3. Teach them to problem-solve.

Let?s say your child wants to go to sleep-away camp, but they?re nervous about being away from home. An anxious parent, Lyons said, might say, ?Well, then there?s no reason for you to go.?

But a better approach is to normalize your child?s nervousness, and help them figure out how to navigate being homesick. So you might ask your child how they can practice getting used to being away from home.

When Lyons?s son was anxious about his first final exam, they brainstormed strategies, including how he?d manage his time and schedule in order to study for the exam.

In other words, engage your child in figuring out how they can handle challenges. Give them the opportunity, over and over, ?to figure out what works and what doesn?t.?

4. Teach your kids concrete skills.

When Lyons works with kids, she focuses on the specific skills they?ll need to learn in order to handle certain situations. She asks herself, ?Where are we going with this [situation]? What skill do they need to get there?? For instance, she might teach a shy child how to greet someone and start a conversation.

5. Avoid ?why? questions.

?Why? questions aren?t helpful in promoting problem-solving. If your child left their bike in the rain, and you ask ?why?? ?what will they say? I was careless. I?m an 8-year-old,? Lyons said.

Ask ?how? questions instead. ?You left your bike out in the rain, and your chain rusted. How will you fix that?? For instance, they might go online to see how to fix the chain or contribute money to a new chain, she said.

Lyons uses ?how? questions to teach her clients different skills. ?How do you get yourself out of bed when it?s warm and cozy? How do you handle the noisy boys on the bus that bug you??

6. Don?t provide all the answers.

Rather than providing your kids with every answer, start using the phrase ?I don?t know,? ?followed by promoting problem-solving,? Lyons said. Using this phrase helps kids learn to tolerate uncertainty and think about ways to deal with potential challenges.

Also, starting with small situations when they?re young helps prepare kids to handle bigger trials. They won?t like it, but they?ll get used to it, she said.

For instance, if your child asks if they?re getting a shot at the doctor?s office, instead of placating them, say, ?I don?t know. You might be due for a shot. Let?s figure out how you?re doing to get through it.?

Similarly, if your child asks, ?Am I going to get sick today?? instead of saying, ?No, you won?t,? respond with, ?You might, so how might you handle that??

If your child worries they?ll hate their college, instead of saying, ?You?ll love it,? you might explain that some freshmen don?t like their school, and help them figure out what to do if they feel the same way, she said.

7. Avoid talking in catastrophic terms.

Pay attention to what you say to your kids and around them. Anxious parents, in particular, tend to ?talk very catastrophically around their children,? Lyons said. For instance, instead of saying ?It?s really important for you to learn how to swim,? they say, ?It?s really important for you to learn how to swim because it?d be devastating to me if you drowned.?

8. Let your kids make mistakes.

?Failure is not the end of the world. [It?s the] place you get to when you figure out what to do next,? Lyons said. Letting kids mess up is tough and painful for parents. But it helps kids learn how to fix slip-ups and make better decisions next time.

According to Lyons, if a child has an assignment, anxious or overprotective parents typically want to make sure the project is perfect, even if their child has no interest in doing it in the first place. But let your kids see the consequences of their actions.

Similarly, if your child doesn?t want to go to football practice, let them stay home, Lyons said. Next time they?ll sit on the bench and probably feel uncomfortable.

9. Help them manage their emotions.

Emotional management is key in resilience. Teach your kids that all emotions are OK, Lyons said. It?s OK to feel angry that you lost the game or someone else finished your ice cream. Also, teach them that after feeling their feelings, they need to think through what they?re doing next, she said.

?Kids learn very quickly which powerful emotions get them what they want. Parents have to learn how to ride the emotions, too.? You might tell your child, ?I understand that you feel that way. I?d feel the same way if I were in your shoes, but now you have to figure out what the appropriate next step is.?

If your child throws a tantrum, she said, be clear about what behavior is appropriate (and inappropriate). You might say, ?I?m sorry we?re not going to get ice cream, but this behavior is unacceptable.?

10. Model resiliency.

Of course, kids also learn from observing their parents? behavior. Try to be calm and consistent, Lyons said. ?You cannot say to a child you want them to control their emotions, while you yourself are flipping out.?

?Parenting takes a lot of practice and we all screw up.? When you do make a mistake, admit it. ?I really screwed up. I?m sorry I handled that poorly. Let?s talk about a different way to handle that in the future,? Lyons said.

Resiliency helps kids navigate the inevitable trials, triumphs and tribulations of childhood and adolescence. Resilient kids also become resilient adults, able to survive and thrive in the face of life?s unavoidable stressors.

China Crowns Asia's Tallest Tower In Shanghai

Work on the main structure of the world's second tallest skyscraper has been completed, as the final beam was placed on the Shanghai Tower.

A crane placed the steel beam 1,900ft above the ground in Shanghai, China's commercial hub, as the building formally overtook Taiwan's Taipei 101 building to become the highest tower in Asia.

Globally it is second only to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at 2,723ft.

The Shanghai Tower, which costs an estimated $14.8bn yuan (?1.56bn), will reach over 2,066ft when it is finally finished.

"It's a landmark and it will change the skyline of Shanghai," Xia Jun, of US design firm Gensler said.

His comments came at a media conference following the traditional "topping out" ceremony.

"I don't think the importance of an architecture lies entirely in its height," he added.

The structure stands alongside China's previous tallest building, the 1,614ft Shanghai World Financial Centre - and is due to open next year, by which time it may have been surpassed as the tallest building in China.

Chinese firm Broad Group have announced plans to construct an 2,749ft tower in the central Chinese city of Changsha, which they say will be completed in April.

But reports in state-run media late last month said construction on the tower had been called off, because the building had not gained full local government approval.

Work on the Shanghai tower began in 2008, and its construction was partially backed by Shanghai's city government.

Concerns were raised last year when long cracks began to appear in the ground close to the building, prompting fears that ground around the tower was subsiding.

But Ding Jiemin, an architect who collaborated on the tower's design, played down fears on Saturday.

"These problems were just during construction period, it will not affect the security of the architecture," he said.

China is home to three of the world's 10 tallest buildings, according to research group Emporis -- which did not count the Shanghai Tower.

The Shanghai Tower's final beam was decorated with red ribbons and flags, and carried a banner which read: "Team of hoisting heroes".

Jobs report shows snail?s pace recovery

A lukewarm July jobs report, with employers reporting that they added the fewest new positions since March, is another sign of a sluggish recovery, economists said.

Employers added 162,000 jobs last month while the unemployment rate fell to 7.4 percent, largely because of a shrinking labor force.

?It?s not striking you as something horrible, but it?s not the direction you want to see,? said Elliot Winer, chief economist at Northeast Economic Analysis Group.

Many of the jobs that were added were low-paying, low-productivity jobs in the retail and food-services industries, according to Nigel Gault, co-chief economist of The Parthenon Group.

?We didn?t create a lot of jobs, and we weren?t creating good ones,? Gault said, who added the trend is not new. ?It?s certainly been something evident over the past year.?

More than half of the new jobs added in July were in those sectors. The average workweek and hourly earnings both dropped, as well.

The results leave uncertainty about the short-term decisions of the Federal Reserve Bank. Chairman Ben Bernanke had indicated tapering of the central bank?s $85 billion bond buying program could end in September if the economy continued to improve. The bond buying program has kept interest rates low, and has been a key factor in a resurgent housing market.

?It leaves fed policy up in the air,? Gault said.

(AP) ? Comic and daytime television host Ellen DeGeneres was picked to host the Academy Awards for the second time.

Show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced DeGeneres' selection Friday. The movie awards show will air on ABC on March 2.

"There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity," the producers said in a statement. "She is beloved everywhere."

DeGeneres quipped: "I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say ? the third time's the charm."

She also announced the gig on Twitter, posting: "It's official: I'm hosting the #Oscars! I'd like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra."

Last year's host, "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, drew mixed reviews for an edgy performance that included a song-and-dance number, "We Saw Your Boobs," about actresses who had gone topless on screen. He had already taken himself out of the running for a return engagement next year.

Academy Awards organizers had hoped to attract a younger audience with MacFarlane, and the ratings showed they succeeded.

With DeGeneres, they went for a star that Hollywood and television viewers were familiar and comfortable with.

About her first hosting role in 2007, television critic Frazier Moore of The Associated Press wrote that "like her, the evening was easygoing, comfortable and relatively unsurprising."

DeGeneres was nominated for an Emmy Award for her last gig. Her daytime talk show has won 45 Daytime Emmys during a decade on the air.

The Oscars, with 40.3 million viewers this year, is very often the year's most-watched television event after the Super Bowl.

Germany?s Electric and Gas Suppliers Look toward Canada

Germany?s electric and gas suppliers always seem to be making energy headlines. As an alternative energy leader and with all the nation?s sweeping energy reforms, the nation?s traditional and alternative electric and gas suppliers have had a lot to deal with?and rather quickly at that. Since 2011 when Germany declared its plans to abandon nuclear in the wake of the Fukushima disaster in Japan, the energy industry has been awash with change?and much of it good. Most recently, for example, Germany made headlines when it announced it would reduce its dependence Russia?s Gazprom and increase ties with Canada.

The Problem with Gazprom

Gazprom is Russia?s state-owned gas supplier and, according to Forbes, ?provides enormous amounts of energy to both Eastern and Western Europe? while fueling its own needs too. The state-owned every giant has been viewed in Europe, however, as monopolistic and Germany is hardly the only nation to desire a reduction in dependence. Recently Lithuania has also made plans to increase liquefied gas imports rather than rely completely on its energy-powerful neighbor.

Experts aren?t entirely sure about how much money Gazprom funnels into the Kremlin, but they are fairly sure that ?its profits are clearly quite sizable and this money clearly helps bolster the government and keep the Russian economy afloat,? according to the Forbes report. Yet until recently with the boom in shale gas and increased production of alternative energies, Russia has been, more or less, like the gas industry god father and generated no small amount of resentment when it comes to high rates?rates which few other nations could negotiate down. Essentially, Europe could count on Gazprom, as Forbes notes, to be both non-transparent and unpredictable. Consequently, nobody is really shocked that Gazprom?s international customers would be willing to dump the utility giant when a better offer came along.

Oh Canada

For Germany, that better energy offer comes from the ?the Canadian company Pieridae Energy,? according to RT. According to a new deal, ?will supply five million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Western Europe for an unspecified several billion euros,? according to the RT report. While Germany isn?t abandoning its Gazprom imports entirely, it does reduce the nation?s reliance on Russia. Germany has stated that the high cost of German gas has led to losses for its own electric and gas suppliers. Now, Germany has a better handle on energy stability since its energy base will be far more diversified.

The Project?s Launch

Germany?s largest energy provider E.ON will begin importing gas from the Canadian company by 2020. According for the Centre for Eastern Studies, the contract involves ?the purchase of 6.5 billion m3 of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a year for 20 years beginning 2020. This volume amounts to 7% of Germany?s annual gas consumption?. The overall deal, according to the centre, will be ?the first contract in history for supplies of such large volumes of gas from North America to Europe.?

The Dynamic Energy Market in Europe

Supplies of LNG and shale gas are transforming the energy sector in Europe. Gazprom is one of the major energy players on the continent so it?s not surprising that is has a tremendous amount of change in store. Some of the change, of course, may be due to its own practices. As the Forbes writer pointed out, given the fact that it was the same distance, through similar pipeline, and the same product?why was Gazprom charging the Czech Republic thirty percent more that product than Hungary, for instance? Price gaps are just one of the reasons why many nations are looking to secure their energy from other sources just as Germany has.

The market is also waiting to hear whether France will lift its ban on shale gas exploration and fracking?a development that could also impact the energy dynamic. Additionally, the UK is exploring its own shale stores and coming to grips with a new energy future. Put simply, Europe?s energy scene is in flux and major developments seem to be occurring on a monthly basis. Experts also say that renewable energies are increasing at a fast rate in many nations which is going to impact the energy trade in one way or another. For now, Germany is readying itself for a new energy partner and the Canadians are happy to have the honor.
