Writer Unboxed ? Building Your Writer Platform ? How Much is ...

GIVEAWAY: I am excited to give away a free copy of either the new & updated 2013 Guide to Literary Agents or the 2013 Children?s Writer?s & Illustrator?s Market to a random commenter. Comment within one week; winners must live in Canada/US to receive the book by mail. Good luck to all!

I often discuss how to build a writer platform on my Guide to Literary Agents Blog and when I speak at writers? conferences. In the blog posts and during the speeches, I found myself often using phrases similar to the following:

  • ?To achieve impressive blog stats??
  • ?Then, when your newsletter gets big enough??
  • ?That way, you can get invited to speak more and that will help you get an agent??

But after I used such generic phrases a few times, the big question started to come from readers and conference attendees: How much is enough?

How do agents and editors define ?impressive blog stats?? When can you say you have a ?sizeable newsletter?? How many speaking engagements should you have each year before you feel confident in sending a nonfiction book proposal out on submission? Should you wait till you have a certain number of Twitter followers or Facebook fans before querying?

Wow. Great questions ? and ones that aren?t really addressed anywhere on the Internet because it?s such a subjective answer. But I?ll try to tackle them here real quick.

THE ANSWER VARIES FOR EVERYONE

The first thing you need to realize is that this question of ?enough? will be different for everyone depending on the writer?s niche. If you?re writing about something specific?say, eclipse chasing?then your audience is quite a thin slice of a pie, and a smaller platform may be quite impressive in your very specific arena. Heck, you could have 2,500 Twitter followers and that may be enough to get you a small book deal with a university press. If you?re writing about something broad and popular, such as finance, your platform will have to be a lot larger if you hope to impress an agent.

The size of your desired book deal also factors in. If you dream of getting paid $50,000 or $100,000 upfront for your book, then your platform must warrant such a large advance. If your goal is simply to get a book published?even if that means with a smaller press that pays little?then platform demands can drop, perhaps drastically.

Naturally, when talking about anything subjective, we must acknowledge that there will be exceptions to the rule. I have no doubt somebody can stand up and say, ?I didn?t even know what a platform was, but my book got published!? just as there will be someone who says, ?My social media numbers are excellent, and I still can?t find a publisher!? What we discuss here are just guidelines; there are exceptions to every rule.

NUMBERS TO AIM FOR?SOME BROAD STROKES

All that being said, let me share some very broad thoughts on what you should be aiming for. These numbers below are directed toward writers of nonfiction, where platform is crucial and mandatory. If you?re writing fiction (where platform is not necessary but still helpful), you can strive for statistics lower than the ?Notable? thresholds below and still appear attractive to publishers.

Blog Page Views
Notable: 20,000/month
Very Notable: 100,000/month
Impressive By Any Means: 500,000/month

Twitter Followers
Notable: 5,000
Very Notable: 15,000
Impressive By Any Means: 50,000

Newsletter Subscribers
Notable: 5,000
Very Notable: 20,000
Impressive By Any Means: 100,000

Public Speaking Appearances
Notable: Speaking to 1,000 people (total) a year
Very Notable: Speaking to 3,000 people (total) a year
Impressive By Any Means: Speaking to 15,000 people (total) a year

Sales of Previous Self-Published Books
Notable: 2,000+ for fiction; 4,000+ for nonfiction
Very Notable: 6,000+ for fiction, 10,000+ for nonfiction
Impressive By Any Means: 15,000+ for fiction, 30,000+ for nonfiction

AGENTS CHIME IN: ?When is a writer?s platform ready??

?I think a lot of that is going to both depend on and determine what level of publisher your book is likely to appeal to. There?s no ?critical mass? of platform, and, in many cases, there?s going to be a natural plateauing of what you can achieve at this stage since platform feeds the book feeds the platform. Very large commercial publishers are hoping for, and can attract, writers with large national platforms like nationally syndicated columnists. You may be unable to achieve such an accomplishment before you want to submit your book, or your ideal publisher may not require such lofty extremes for your platform. What can you achieve? You may not have a regular column in a big magazine, but if you sell regularly to a number of large pubs, mention the readership of each in your proposal. Maybe you?re blogging for The Huffington Post ? Keep in mind that you don?t sacrifice a timely story to continue to build platform and perhaps miss the most opportune window to submit the book. And don?t assume a long history is better than recent history. Publishers want to see recent platform, recent exposure.?
- Gina Panettieri (Talcott Notch Literary Services)

?It?s helpful to remember that not everyone who is part of your audience will actually buy the book?let?s say 10 percent, for example (not a real number, by the way). So if you have 100,000 followers (10,000 copies sold), it?s a lot more appealing than 500 followers (50 copies sold). And if you have social media, speaking engagements, and TV appearances, they can only help. For social media, I will start to be impressed when a writer has about 5,000 followers/fans/people, but 10,000 is really ideal. Speaking engagements should happen frequently and for a substantial audience. What I look for is national and international appeal, but that can start with regional and local opportunities.?
- Roseanne Wells (Jennifer De Chiara Literary Agency)

?This is a really good question. I?ve had projects I?ve been interested in or maybe even have signed up with the understanding that there?s work to be done in the way of building or improving the platform before a publisher will be interested. When you can take a project out and have an expectation that it won?t get shot down on the basis of platform is a judgment call (as is which publishers will feel there?s enough platform there, and whether more is necessary to target the ideal publisher). But there?s no real answer for ?How much is enough?? The platform is something that should be constantly (if incrementally) growing and evolving over the author?s career. Even if one of my authors already has a great platform, I will forward him or her any contact or idea I think may be useful to make it even stronger. I can recall at least one author who accused me of constantly ?moving the goalposts.? She said that she?d done what I?d asked and now I was asking for more. But that?s missing the point. There isn?t a line in the sand that you need to get across. It?s demonstrating your involvement in?or even your necessity to?the world you are writing about. And that isn?t any one thing.?
- Stephany Evans (FinePrint Literary Management)

UK band Ultrasound rises from ashes of 90s implosion

DURHAM, England (Reuters) - Rock and roll is full of cautionary tales - of excess, break-ups and missed opportunities.

British indie band Ultrasound, touted as the "next big thing" in the 1990s only to sink without trace following bitter bust-ups, reports of in-band infidelity and "creative differences", fits the bill neatly.

But in the case of the quintet led by the imposing Andrew "Tiny" Wood, the tale may yet have a happy ending.

Ultrasound has just released a second album "Play for Today" 13 years after its ambitious yet poorly received double-CD debut "Everything Picture" proved the beginning and the end of an act that record labels had fought each other to sign.

This time around there are no six-figure sums, no flights to the United States to be wined and dined, none of the hype generated by record company A&R departments whose influence has waned with the arrival of the internet.

Instead there is a 10-song, single-CD album which failed to trouble the charts in Britain on its release last month, a series of small gigs and decidedly modest hopes for the future.

"It would be nice if we could earn enough so that we could do this," Wood said during a recent interview in Durham, northern England, close to where he now lives.

"Tiny", who is anything but small, has been singing in other bands and to help make ends meet spends two days a week washing dishes in nearby Newcastle, while principal songwriter Richard Green is a delivery man working "ridiculous hours.

"If we could earn enough so that each of us could be comfortable then that would be great. I don't think you should have any more," Wood added.

Ultrasound's manager Andy Macleod said he too, was not getting carried away.

"We can't compete with the squillion-pound marketing spend of the majors (labels) so we are taking one step at a time and seeing how far it can take us," he said ahead of the band's biggest comeback gig to date in front of 600 people in London.

"So hopefully it's a slow-burn to world domination ... around 2021. Pink Floyd meets The Who - Punk Floyd!"

BRITPOP'S DECLINE

Even in the late 1990s, when Ultrasound signed with Nude Records for 250,000 pounds ($400,000) and were on the covers of music magazines, Wood did not get ahead of himself.

"I was in my mid-30s then," he explained. "I wasn't in some kind of bubble or anything ... I've seen bands come and go, I know how it works."

Wood, who is "48 or 49" - he says he can't remember which - recalled the heady days of bidding wars and big contracts which the music industry is still recovering from.

"There was still that sense of take a band, throw a lot of money at it and you've got another Oasis," he explained, referring to the industry's search for someone to fill the void left by Britpop's decline at the end of the 1990s.

"It doesn't work that way, really. You've got to take bands that you believe in and build them up."

In the case of Ultrasound, he blames the band for being naive and the label for failing to offer enough guidance when Everything Picture came out.

He and his fellow musicians, including Green and Vanessa Best on bass guitar, could have negotiated a significantly bigger contract, but wanted "artistic freedom" above all else.

What they created was an album that baffled the music press at the time and flickered briefly in the British album charts where it rose to no. 23 in 1999, but which has since come to be regarded as a "lost" classic of progressive rock.

"If any criticism could be made, I suppose it would be that we do that with everything - you try and make a nice little pop song and you always start adding things in to make it big and joyous. If there's a criticism, it's that," Wood said.

"We get criticism for being over-ambitious. So what? It's good. It's better than not being ambitious at all."

Their dramatic rise and fall is not new. The hugely influential Sex Pistols released one studio album in 1977 before a tempestuous break-up the following year. Subsequent comebacks have been jeered as "sellouts" as much as cheered by fans.

Liverpool's The La's took around four years to complete their eponymous debut album in the early 1990s, only for volatile group leader Lee Mavers to instantly disown it and the band to drift into relative obscurity.

BAND THRIVES ON STAGE

NME magazine called Ultrasound the "most underrated band" of the 1990s - it flourished briefly at the time Coldplay were starting out - and described Everything Picture as a "perfect, bloated double album of endlessly ambitious guitar rock."

Wood said he had wanted to produce a three-CD album, but compromised and stuck with two.

"We didn't know how long we were going to last," the soft-spoken singer explained. "We thought, well, let's put everything in this because this might be the only chance we get. It wasn't necessarily made for 1999, it was made for the future."

Ultrasound's biggest draw was their live shows. Wood's stage presence and the drama of the band's big, punk-infused sounds make for an arresting spectacle and one that could fill far bigger venues than they have of late.

In its heyday, Ultrasound played music festivals like Glastonbury and T in the Park, although Wood also recalled performing in front of two or three people in the early years.

Surprisingly, Wood is not a big fan of performing.

"I'm good at doing it, I know I am. But it doesn't necessarily mean I enjoy doing it. (But) I'm quite happy to do a lot of gigs because I know that's where we excel and that's how we can sell records."

Most reviews of the new album, out on the Fierce Panda Records label, have been positive.

"Play for Today is above all else a collection of consistently fine-tuned anthems, suffused with passion, intelligence and a kind of heroic, life-affirming despair," wrote Paul Whitelaw on the BBC's music website.

The Drowned in Sound website gave a more mixed review, calling the album "fine" and the live shows "still incredible" but adding that Play for Today was more a trip down memory lane than a "reclaiming of the flame."

Play for Today opens with "Welfare State", a brazen, angry comeback featuring the lines "We crashed and burned but we return/ To claim our stake."

"Nonsense", about self-loathing, is jaunty and harmonious by comparison, "Between Two Rivers" is a mournful take on Wood's vision of belonging while in "Long Way Home" he lets loose his romantic side, singing of a "flamingo pink and powder blue" sky.

Now Play for Today is out, the hard work begins.

The band has begun recording new music, including an extra-long "prelude" to their next album, and has eight confirmed gigs starting at York's Fibbers on November 22.

"I'm a little bit cynical myself, and I always take everything with a pinch of salt, but the response that I have noticed has been very positive," was Wood's typically blunt assessment of the comeback so far. "We'll see."

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Schools shut their doors in protest and Pakistanis across the country held vigils Wednesday to pray for a 14-year-old girl who was shot by a Taliban gunman after daring to advocate education for girls and criticize the militant group.

The shooting of Malala Yousufzai on Tuesday in the town of Mingora in the volatile Swat Valley horrified Pakistanis across the religious, political and ethnic spectrum. Many in the country hoped the attack and the outrage it has sparked will be a turning point in Pakistan's long-running battle against the Taliban, which still enjoys considerable public support for fighting U.S. forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

Top U.S. officials condemned the attack and offered to help the girl.

A Taliban gunman walked up to a bus taking children home from school and shot Malala in the head and neck. Another girl on the bus was also wounded. Pictures of the vehicle showed bloodstained seats where the girls were sitting.

Malala appeared to be out of immediate danger after doctors operated on her early Wednesday to remove a bullet lodged in her neck. But she remained in intensive care at a hospital in the northwestern city of Peshawar, and Pakistan's Interior Minister said the next 48 hours would be crucial.

Small rallies and prayer sessions were held for her in Mingora, the eastern city of Lahore, the southern port city of Karachi and the capital of Islamabad. In newspapers, on TV and in social media forums, Pakistanis voiced their disgust with the attack, and expressed their admiration for a girl who spoke out against the Taliban when few dared.

Even the country's top military officer ? a man who rarely makes public statements ? condemned the shooting and visited the Peshawar hospital to check on the teenager.

"In attacking Malala, the terrorist have failed to grasp that she is not only an individual, but an icon of courage and hope who vindicates the great sacrifices that the people of Swat and the nation gave, for wresting the valley from the scourge of terrorism," Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani said in a statement.

In Washington, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said US officials "strongly condemn" the shooting and called it "barbaric" and "cowardly."

He said U.S. has offered any assistance to Malala, mentioning possible air ambulance transport to a facility suitable for her treatment if it becomes necessary.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton praised the young Pakistani girl.

"She was attacked and shot by extremists who don't want girls to have an education and don't want girls to speak for themselves, and don't want girls to become leaders," she said.

At the United Nations, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack on Malala, calling it a "heinous and cowardly act," U.N. spokesman Nartin Nesirky said.

Malala is admired across Pakistan for exposing the Taliban's atrocities and advocating girls' education in the face of religious extremism.

At the age of 11, she began writing a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC about life under the Taliban in the Swat Valley. After the military ousted the militants in 2009, she began publicly speaking out about the need for girls' education, something the Taliban strongly opposes.

The group claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack, vowed to target her again.

Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik said authorities have identified her attackers and know how they got into the valley, but no arrests have been made.

The news that surgeons were able to remove a bullet lodged in Malala's neck was greeted with relief by many. But even with such an outpouring of grief and outrage in Pakistan over the young girl's shooting, it was unclear whether it would indeed trigger a shift in public opinion against the Taliban.

Many in Pakistan view the group as waging a noble fight against U.S. troops that invaded another Muslim country, Afghanistan, and they argue that the Taliban problem within Pakistan will fade once American forces leave. They argue that Taliban attacks against targets in Pakistan aim to punish the government in Islamabad for its alliance with Washington.

"Pakistan society is polarized on who is doing terrorism," said Hasan-Askari Rizvi, a political analyst in Lahore. He said that divide has been evident even in the public condemnations of the attack, with some people speaking out strongly against the Taliban while others have criticized the government for failing to protect Malala.

Omar R. Quraishi, the editorial pages editor at Pakistan's English-language Express Tribune newspaper, questioned whether the public outrage had reached such a critical mass that it would indeed mark a turning point.

He said Kayani's strong statement in support of the girl may be an attempt to gauge whether there is enough public outrage to support a sharp response from the army against the Taliban. The general, said Quraishi, doesn't want to be in a position where people are asking: "Why are you fighting America's wars?"

The Pakistani military has been waging a deadly fight in the tribal regions against militants at a cost of about 4,000 soldiers killed. But critics, especially in the U.S., accuse the army of going after militants that attack the Pakistani state while cultivating others that it feels will be useful someday in Afghanistan.

Still, there is a precedent in Pakistan of Taliban excesses provoking public outrage, which the military has then capitalized on to move against the militants.

In 2009, after a video surfaced of militants publicly whipping a woman, purportedly in the Swat Valley, triggered a wave of public revulsion, the army felt empowered enough to launch a major offensive against the Taliban in the area. Government forces flushed the militants out of the scenic valley, but failed to capture or kill the movement's senior leaders.
